The Charlie Larson Memorial Scholarship Announced

Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University (LCOOU) is excited to announce the creation of the Charlie Larson Memorial Scholarship.  Jim and Debra Larson have committed $1000 per year over a course of 5 years.

Charles Larson, known as Charlie to all, was a renaissance person. He was born in New London, CT and resided most of his adult live in Janesville and Hayward, WI.  After a stint in the United States Army Intelligence Corps in Germany he returned to his crafts of carpentry and fishing.  He was quite a talker and enjoyed sharing his knowledge with everyone.  Living part of the year in Hayward exposed him to the world of mushrooms. It was the thrill of his life to take LCOOU Continuing Education students through mushroom hunting classes teaching about the species and sharing safety precautions about what was edible and not. Finds like Bears Head Tooth Fungi (that has a taste reminiscent of lobster) morels, black trumpets and other tasty morsels had Madison Chefs welcome him into their kitchens.

Increased scholarship offerings reduce the barriers of tuition and textbook costs for Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University students. This reduction in barriers supports the University’s mission to provide Anishinaabe communities with post-secondary and continuing education while advancing the language, culture, and history of the Ojibwe.

The scholarship application will be available on the university website, www.lco.edu/scholarships and open to Native American undergraduate students to apply. For further questions, call 715-634-4790 ext. 186 or email advancement@lco.edu.
