LCOOU establishes Waaswaaganing Scholarship Fund

(Hayward, WI) – January 11, 2024 – Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University is proud to establish a new endowed scholarship fund, the Waaswaaganing Scholarship Fund.

An anonymous donor supported the creation of the Fund with a $15,000 contribution. All are welcome to join in supporting the growth of the Fund and continued support of Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University’s students.

The Waaswaaganing Scholarship Fund will support students who are enrolled in, or who are descendants of, the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. Eligible students will have an established financial need consistent with the policies of the University, and they will need to have maintained at least a 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA). This GPA can be attained in the prior semester, or it can be the student’s cumulative GPA since their enrollment with the University. Those who satisfy the criteria and receive awards from the Fund will need to be enrolled for the current semester with a minimum of twelve credits.

“As Director of Institutional Advancement, I work with our donors and the University’s internal departments to coordinate our efforts towards one cause, supporting our students’ educational journeys,” Jessica Wagner-Schultz said. “It’s great to announce this new Fund because it’s one more result of our continued daily work to further that cause.”

As a non-profit, the University relies on charitable donations from the public to fund much of its operations. Over the recent years, the University has maintained a steady growth rate in terms of our increasing ability to support our students.

“Those donations coming through the University’s doorway are, at the end of the day, a way of giving back to the Lac Courte Oreilles and surrounding local communities. Our students get their education and move onwards to do good things for their reservations and for the Wisconsin communities at large,” University President Russell Swagger said.

The new addition of the Waaswaaganing Scholarship Fund will encourage more students to apply to Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University.
