Eagle’s Nest Closet Opens at Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University
The Eagle’s Nest Closet opens at Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University (LCOOU) October 2022.
According to a recent LCOOU student survey, 89% of students self-identify as ‘at risk’ or ‘special populations’ meaning many are academically and economically disadvantaged for several reasons. Nearly half of these students identified as single parents and reported considerably low incomes with larger family sizes.
Wes Wilson, LCOOU retention coordinator shares “For many students, lack of resources can determine whether they remain enrolled or abandon their post-secondary education to meet basic needs.”
To address this challenge, Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University utilized capacity-building funding through the American Indian College Fund to plan and launch the LCOOU Eagles Nest closet. The Eagles Nest Closet provides essential basic needs including non-perishable foods, household items, winter clothing, toiletries, and more.
Wilson connected with external tribal and non-tribal organizations to ensure the sustainability of the project and to build stronger bridges to existing networks for support which will assist the student wholistically when pursuing their educational goals.
